The Two Voices Inside: Which One is Driving Today?

  • When Being Self-Aware Isn’t Enough to Stop the Noise

Most of us live with a strange kind of internal friction. We’re smart. We’ve done the work. We even know better. Yet we still find ourselves caught in a loop of self-judgment or a sudden, cold spike of anxiety. It feels like there are two different people living inside one skin. One version of us is capable and kind. The other feels fragile, defensive, and perpetually behind.

I’ve spent a lot of time looking at this in my own life and with the people I work with. I’ve come to see it as two distinct thought systems. You might call them the small self and the true self. These days, I find it more helpful to call them the fear voice and the clarity voice. When you’re caught in the middle, it can be hard to tell the difference between fear vs intuition, but there are physical clues that can help you choose the steadier path.

I remember a specific Tuesday. I was sitting at my desk when a wave of doubt hit me. It was so hard that I could feel a literal buzzing restlessness in my hands. It felt like I needed to jump out of my skin. You’ll notice I mention these physical cues often. I talk about the bracing, the coldness in the gut, and the hollow pit. I do that because our bodies usually get the news that we’re scared long before our brains do. If you’re feeling a certain heaviness in your chest or a clenching in your jaw right now, just notice it. I’m pointing it out so you can start to feel it too. We want to feel it in the body rather than just thinking about it.

Fear vs Intuition: The Fear Voice and the Quiet Truth

The fear voice is not a villain. It’s more like a terrified part of us trying to run the show. It sees the world through the lens of "not enough." Not enough time. Not enough love. Not enough safety. When the fear voice is in charge, we feel separate. We feel like we have to perform or fix something just to earn our right to exist. It’s a state of constant, low-grade war.

Then there’s the clarity voice. This is not a better version of you that you have to build. It’s the steady awareness that’s already there under the noise. It’s the part of you that doesn’t need to prove anything. It feels like a softening. It’s a release of that bracing in the shoulders. It’s the quiet realization that you’re fundamentally okay, even in the middle of a mess.

The shift from one to the other doesn’t happen through a massive life overhaul. It happens in tiny, quiet moments. It’s the second you realize you’re bracing again. In that moment, you choose to take one breath that actually reaches your belly. You don’t have to fix the fear voice. You just have to stop letting it hold the map.

If you’re feeling that internal friction today, don’t try to analyze it away. Just see if you can find one small place in your body where things feel a little more solid. Maybe it’s your feet on the floor. Maybe it’s the weight of your hands in your lap. That’s your clarity voice checking in.

    A Moment to Reflect

I often find that music can reach the places where words get stuck. I suggest listening to the instrumental version of "Saturn" by Sleeping At Last. It helps me remember the clarity voice when the noise gets too loud.
